Should you consider breast reduction surgery?

If your breasts cause back or neck pain, if bra straps cut into your skin or cause permanent creasing in your shoulders, if you have rashes or irritation under the breasts, if you find exercise difficult, if you have difficulty sleeping due to discomfort, or if you have trouble finding a bra or clothing that fit then you may consider breast reduction surgery.

Says Dr. Andrew Ordon, “Breast Reduction surgery is one of the most gratifying plastic surgery procedures that I perform. It’s a true balance of reconstructive and cosmetic work that improves a persons’ health and appearance.” Healthy Living Made Simple magazine, April/May 2016 p. 25 HLMS.com

Breast reduction surgery has some risks, and it is best to talk with a highly regarded breast surgeon or plastic surgeon before you make the decision on whether or not to have the procedure. Visit the Mayo Clinic to read about some of the risks associated with the surgery. Also in this article are things to consider if you decide to have the procedure including how to prepare and what to expect during recovery.

Dealing with Chronic Back Pain

Pain makes us appreciate life more when we are pain-free. Any pain is the "worst pain" whether it is a toothache, a headache, a hang-nail, or something else. Pain can be our best friend, when it stops us from taking action that causes more damage. As our worst enemy, it becomes an anchor, dragging along with us everywhere, and keeping us from the things we like to do most.

Because Maine Warmers' microwave heating pad are used as a home remedy for pain, I often receive phone calls from people who experience chronic pain. When I met Andrea Bowen, the creator of an audio CD, The Art of Living with Chronic Pain, I never dreamed I would soon have a personal need for her materials. After a back spasm that left me with terrible back pain, I listened to her CD. It helped me confront and deal with a nagging pain, that like a cranky child, had hold of my leg and would not let go.

Andrea's CD on living with pain does not offer a cure, but provides awareness and help in dealing with chronic pain. I was lucky that back surgery has given me the freedom of living normally again with a few minor adjustments in lifestyle.
I am also pleased to say that my trusty Maine Warmer microwave heating pad for the back brought soothing comfort during the journey to recovery. After surgery, I kept it in the freezer for gentle cold therapy to help reduce swelling. It was soft and gentle -- not harsh like ice cubes -- and made icing more pleasurable than not.

If you know of someone who is living with pain, or is recovering from back surgery, the gift a fun extra large Whale Back Warmer may be just the thing to bring relief and a smile.

Living with Sciatica

Sciatica is a result of pressure on the Sciatic nerve usually caused by back or spinal problems, injuries, tumors, or other bone or muscle problems. An article on Sciatica at the Mayo Clinic web site discusses the symptoms, causes, risk factors, treatments, prevention, home remedies, and alternative medicines among other related topics.

Finding the cause of this condition is critical so it can be treated effectively. That can be challenging.

Exercise is recommended to help strengthen the muscles and maintain good posture to help retard degenerative disc disease as one ages. Working with a physical therapist or trainer to learn how to exercise to prevent further injury is important.

Over-the-counter medications may help reduce swelling and pain. Stretching and massage may offer some relief. Ice packs will help reduce swelling and heating pads will help relax tight muscles. Talk with your physician to develop a plan to manage the pain without overusing medications or causing more discomfort.

Maine Warmers sells Back Warmers and Neck Warmers that may be heated in the microwave and used as

Exercise to Maintain Health & Independence

No matter what age we are we want to live independently and have energy to do the things we like to do. The National Institute on Aging recommends exercise to achieve these goals for as long as we can.

Exercise can save your life as well as your lifestyle. Maintaining good health demands physical activity especially as we age. Each year our muscles and connective tissue seem to stiffen up and limit our flexibility.

Exercise gives you strength to stay independent as long as possible, improves energy levels and balance, helps delay or prevent some diseases, reduces depression and perks you up.

In their brochure they offer 4 ways to exercise to maintain:

  • Endurance
  • Strength
  • Balance
  • Flexibility
To read or receive their free brochure about exercise see the AgePage at the National Institute on Aging. “Exercise and Physical Activity: Getting Fit For Life.”

If you find you have a stiff muscle from exercising you may want to use a microwavable heating pad to help maintain flexibility. The heat helps relax muscles and improve circulation and flexibility.

Maine Warmers offers microwave heating pads that are decorative as well as functional. They are safe and easy to use and make great gifts for elderly folks. Cats, and Dogs can be left on a couch or chair and do not look like electric heating pads. This can also be used as a bed warmer.
